Amelia Earhart disappeared on July 2, 1937, while attempting to reach Howland Island, a small and remote coral island in the central Pacific Ocean, to refuel during her around-the-world flight. Her last known position was near Howland Island, but due to communication issues and low fuel, she never successfully reached the island and is believed to have crashed into the ocean nearby after running out of fuel. Despite extensive search efforts, neither Earhart nor her plane was ever found, and the exact location of her disappearance remains one of the greatest aviation mysteries.
There are alternative theories and ongoing research, including hypotheses that she may have landed on Nikumaroro Island and later died there. However, the widely accepted official account places her disappearance near Howland Island in the Pacific Ocean.
