Cane toads (Rhinella marina) are native to South and mainland Central America, ranging from the Amazon basin in South America to the lower Rio Grande Valley in southern Texas. They have been introduced to many other regions around the world as a method of agricultural pest control. For example, in 1935, cane toads were introduced into Queensland, Australia, from Hawaii to control cane beetles that were damaging sugar cane crops. They had previously been introduced to other places such as the Caribbean islands and Pacific islands for similar reasons. Despite their intended use for pest control, cane toads have become an invasive species in many of these introduced areas due to their toxic skin and rapid breeding success.
