Cyndi Lauper grew up in the Ozone Park neighborhood of Queens, New York City. Although she was born in Brooklyn, her family moved to Ozone Park when she was about four years old, and she spent most of her childhood and teenage years there, living in a railroad-style apartment. She grew up in a Catholic family and attended local schools in Queens. Her parents divorced when she was five, and she was raised by her mother along with her siblings. Lauper experienced some hardship in school and in her family life, which influenced her early years and creative development.
