Derek Jeter attended the University of Michigan, where he was recruited to play baseball and enrolled in the fall semester of 1992. However, he only attended for one semester before being drafted by the New York Yankees as the 6th overall pick in the 1992 MLB draft, which led him to pursue a professional baseball career instead of continuing college at that time
. More than 30 years later, in 2025, Jeter was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws degree by the University of Michigan during their spring commencement ceremony. He also served as the commencement speaker for the Class of 2025, officially becoming a Wolverine in an honorary capacity
