Hurricane Michael made landfall near Tyndall Air Force Base in the Florida Panhandle, close to Mexico Beach, Florida, on October 10, 2018. It struck as a Category 5 hurricane with maximum sustained wind speeds of about 160 mph, making it the most intense hurricane to hit the Florida Panhandle on record. The storm caused catastrophic damage especially around Panama City Beach, Mexico Beach, and Cape San Blas areas and remained powerful as it moved inland into southwest Georgia.
