Pennywise, also known as "It," is an ancient, trans-dimensional malevolent entity that originated outside the known universe in a realm called the Macroverse. It is billions of years old and likely created or linked to cosmic beings in Stephen King's mythology. Pennywise arrived on Earth millions of years ago during a cataclysmic event, crash-landing in the area that would become Derry, Maine. It has since fed in cycles of roughly 25 to 27 years, primarily preying on the children of Derry by taking on fearsome shapes, most famously the form of a dancing clown called Pennywise. The creature's true form is unknown but is thought to be related to hypnotic energy balls called the Deadlights or a spider-like entity. Pennywise uses fear to feed on its victims and is known for manipulating Derry's town and its inhabitants to maintain its influence and hide its presence. This origin and backstory are detailed in Stephen King's novel "It" and its adaptations, as well as in related lore and prequels.
