Salt water taffy originated in Atlantic City, New Jersey, in the late 19th century. The candy became popular after a candy store on the Atlantic City boardwalk was flooded by ocean water in 1883, soaking the taffy. The store owner, David Bradley, reportedly joked with a young girl that what he had was "salt water taffy," and the name stuck. Despite the name, salt water taffy itself is made with salt and water, but not actual seawater. The candy became a well-known seaside treat and a popular souvenir from beach vacations along the Jersey Shore starting from this time.
