Terry Fox ended his Marathon of Hope run just east of Thunder Bay, Ontario. After running 5,373 kilometers (3,339 miles) over 143 days, he had to stop because the cancer that had caused his leg amputation had returned in his lungs. The exact spot where Terry ended his run is marked by a highway sign at mileage 3,339 on the Trans-Canada Highway, located in the Municipality of Shuniah, about 11.5 kilometers east of the Terry Fox Monument and Lookout near Thunder Bay. The Marathon of Hope concluded here on September 1, 1980, when he got into his support van for the last time.
