Terry Fox ran across Canada in his famous "Marathon of Hope" to raise money for cancer research. He started his run in St. John's, Newfoundland on April 12, 1980. From there, he ran through the Atlantic provinces, Quebec, Ontario, and was forced to stop just outside Thunder Bay, Ontario after running about 5,373 kilometers (approximately 3,339 miles) when his cancer returned in his lungs. His goal was to run across the entire country, from the east coast to the west coast (Victoria, British Columbia), but he stopped partway due to his illness.
So, Terry Fox ran starting in Newfoundland, traveling through:
- Newfoundland and Labrador
- Prince Edward Island
- Nova Scotia
- New Brunswick
- Quebec
- Ontario
He was unable to complete the run all the way to British Columbia as initially planned.
