Terry Fox stopped running outside of Thunder Bay, Ontario, on September 1, 1980. After running for 143 days and covering 5,373 kilometres (3,339 miles), he was forced to end his Marathon of Hope because cancer had appeared in his lungs. The exact stop location is marked near the Trans-Canada Highway at mileage 3,339, about 11.5 kilometers east of the Terry Fox Monument in the Municipality of Shuniah. This marked the end of his cross-Canada run to raise money for cancer research.
