The Anglo-Saxons came from a mix of Germanic peoples originally from northern Germany, Denmark, and parts of the Netherlands. Specifically, they descended from three main tribes: the Angles from the region of Angeln in northern Germany, the Saxons from northern Germany (Old Saxony), and the Jutes from the Jutland peninsula in Denmark. These tribes migrated to Britain in the 5th century, following the decline of Roman power on the island, either invited or as settlers, and established several kingdoms that would lay the foundation for what became England. Their settlement period generally began around 410 AD and lasted into the 7th century. This migration resulted in an admixture of these Germanic peoples with the native Celtic inhabitants and later Viking and Danish influences.
