The Dust Bowl happened in the southern Great Plains of the United States, mainly in the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles and parts of Kansas, Colorado, and New Mexico.
Main region
The core Dust Bowl area centered on the High Plains west of the 100th meridian, especially the Texas Panhandle and Oklahoma Panhandle. These areas experienced the worst dust storms and soil erosion during the 1930s drought.
Wider impact
Surrounding parts of western Kansas, southeastern Colorado, and northeastern New Mexico were also heavily affected and are usually included in maps of the Dust Bowl region. Dust from these storms traveled far, reaching Midwestern and East Coast cities, but those distant places were not considered part of the Dust Bowl itself.
