The First Fleet first landed at Botany Bay on January 18, 1788. However, Governor Arthur Phillip found the site unsuitable for settlement due to poor soil, scarce fresh water, and a lack of good anchorage. Consequently, he explored northward and chose Port Jackson, where on January 26, 1788, the fleet landed at Sydney Cove. This site became the location for the first British colony in Australia, marking the beginning of European settlement on the continent.
