where did the marathon of hope start

The Marathon of Hope started in St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada. On April 12, 1980, Terry Fox began his run by dipping his prosthetic leg into the Atlantic Ocean at St. John's and then embarked on his cross-Canada journey to raise money for cancer research. He started with a 12-mile run after a brief ceremony at St. John's, with a police escort and people following him in cars.
