where did the maya live

The Maya lived in a wide territory that included southeastern Mexico and northern Central America. This area covered the entire Yucatán Peninsula and all of the territory now in Guatemala and Belize, as well as western parts of Honduras and El Salvador. The Maya civilization was mainly situated in lowland plains and dense forests, with some population centers in the highland valleys of Guatemala. Today, the Maya people still inhabit this same general region.
