Vasco da Gama landed in India at Kappad Beach (Kappakadavu) near Kozhikode in the state of Kerala. The historic landing took place on May 20, 1498. Kappad Beach is recognized as the spot where Vasco da Gama first arrived in India by sea, opening the sea route from Europe to India. There is a commemorative stone monument at the site marking this event. However, there is some historical debate, with some historians suggesting alternative landing sites like Panthalayini near Kollam. Despite the debate, Kappad remains the widely accepted site of his landing.
