Wine originated in the region of West Asia, specifically around the Southern Caucasus area, which includes modern-day Georgia, Armenia, and parts of northeastern Turkey. The earliest evidence of wine production dates back to between 6000 BC and 4000 BC. Georgia is notable for some of the oldest archaeological finds related to winemaking, including grape residues in clay jars from around 6000 BC, and Armenia hosts the oldest known winery from about 4100 BC. These findings indicate that ancient peoples in this area were the first to domesticate grapes and produce wine scientifically.
