where do beavers build their homes

Beavers build their homes called lodges, typically in ponds, beside rivers, or lakes. They construct dams on shallow rivers or streams to create ponds, which provide a safe aquatic environment around their lodges for protection from predators. There are two main types of homes beavers build:

  • Conical lodges in ponds or still waters, made from sticks, mud, and rocks, with underwater entrances allowing beavers to enter and exit safely.
  • Bank lodges, which are burrows dug into the banks of rivers or streams, often with underwater entrances as well.

Beavers may also dig burrows into riverbanks if building a lodge is not possible. The lodges contain chambers used for sleeping, eating, and raising their young. The construction of dams and lodges ensures protection, stable water levels, and access to food. Underwater entrances and thick walls of mud and sticks provide insulation and safety throughout winter.
