where do frogs go in the winter

Frogs survive winter by entering a state called brumation, which is similar to hibernation where their metabolism slows down significantly to conserve energy. Where they go depends on the species and their habitat:

  • Aquatic frogs like green frogs and bullfrogs typically hibernate underwater, lying on the muddy bottom of ponds or streams where the water does not freeze. They stay near oxygen-rich water and may lie partially buried or swim slowly occasionally.
  • Terrestrial frogs usually burrow deep underground below the frost line, or seek shelter in logs, leaf litter, cracks, crevices, or rodent burrows to avoid freezing temperatures.
  • Some can survive freezing by producing antifreeze compounds, allowing them to thaw and wake in spring.

Frogs rely on moist environments, slow their body functions to survive the cold months, and awaken in spring when temperatures rise to resume normal activity.
