You can sign up for Medicare primarily through the Social Security Administration (SSA). The easiest and fastest way is to apply online at SocialSecurity.gov by creating or signing into a personal my Social Security account. You can also apply by calling Social Security at 1-800-772-1213 or by visiting your local Social Security office. If you or your spouse worked for a railroad, you can contact the Railroad Retirement Board at 1-877-772-5772. There is an Initial Enrollment Period that starts three months before the month you turn 65, includes the month you turn 65, and ends three months after that month. If you are already receiving Social Security or Railroad Retirement benefits before age 65, you may be automatically enrolled in Medicare Parts A and B. About two weeks after you sign up, you will receive a welcome package with your Medicare card.
