where do meteorites come from

Meteorites primarily come from the main asteroid belt located between Mars and Jupiter. About 70% of all known meteorite falls originate from just three young asteroid families (Karin, Koronis, and Massalia) formed by collisions in the asteroid belt millions of years ago. These asteroid fragments can be pulled by Jupiter's gravity into the inner solar system, where some eventually collide with Earth. Besides asteroids, a small number of meteorites are rocks blasted off other planetary bodies such as the Moon and Mars during impact events. Some meteorites might even come from comets. Thus, meteorites are mostly pieces of broken asteroids from the asteroid belt, with a smaller portion coming from planetary surfaces or cometary material inside our solar system.
