Most people in Australia live in a few large cities along the coastal southeast and southwest, especially Sydney and Melbourne.
Main population areas
Most Australians are urban and coastal, with around two-thirds living in capital cities such as Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, and Adelaide. These cities sit mainly on the east and southeast coasts, where climate, water, and jobs are more favorable.
Sydney and Melbourne are the two largest urban areas, each with populations of over 5 million people, making them the primary population centers. Together with Brisbane, Perth, and Adelaide, these five big cities account for well over half of Australia’s total population.
