Orangutans live exclusively in the rainforests of the Southeast Asian islands of Borneo and Sumatra. They are arboreal animals, spending most of their lives in trees, swinging in the treetops and building nests to sleep in. These islands are part of Indonesia and Malaysia, which are the only countries where wild orangutans are found today. There are three species of orangutans: the Bornean orangutan, the Sumatran orangutan, and the Tapanuli orangutan, all of which are critically endangered.
