Peacocks, or more accurately peafowl, live primarily in the Indian subcontinent and parts of Southeast Asia. The most well-known species, the Indian or blue peafowl, is native to India and Sri Lanka, where it inhabits open forests near streams, cultivated lands, and areas around Hindu and Buddhist temples
. The green peafowl is found in Southeast Asia, including Myanmar (Burma) and Java
. Additionally, the Congo peafowl inhabits the forested interior of the Democratic Republic of the Congo in Africa
. Peafowl prefer open lowland forests, farms, agricultural fields, and can also be found in tropical and dry habitats. They often roam in cities and parks within their natural range in search of food
. In India, the Indian peafowl is found across most of the country, from the Indus valley to Assam, and from the Himalayas to the southern tip, generally up to elevations of 1,500 to 1,800 meters
. They live in small groups and roost in trees at night despite being ground feeders
