Squirrels live in a variety of habitats depending on their species. Tree squirrels, like the common Eastern gray squirrel, typically live in mature forests and urban areas with plenty of trees, building nests called dreys high in tree canopies. Ground squirrels live in open areas, grasslands, prairies, and sometimes rocky terrain, where they dig elaborate burrows underground. Flying squirrels also live in wooded areas, but they are nocturnal and glide between trees using a special membrane. Squirrels are highly adaptable and can also live in parks, gardens, and even attics or chimneys in urban environments.
