Tasmanian devils live primarily on the island of Tasmania, Australia. Their core habitat is within the low to moderate annual rainfall zone of eastern and north-western Tasmania. They especially prefer dry sclerophyll forests and coastal woodlands. They tend to favor open and dry forests rather than wet or tall forests and are sometimes found near roads where they scavenge on roadkill. Although they were once widespread in mainland Australia, they became extinct there about 3,500 years ago and are now mostly restricted to Tasmania. Recently, they have been reintroduced in a sanctuary on the Australian mainland in New South Wales for conservation efforts.
