Farsi, also known as Persian, is primarily spoken in the following countries:
- Iran: The official language, spoken by around 70 million people as a first language.
- Afghanistan: Known there as Dari, it is one of the two official languages, widely spoken especially in Kabul and northern and western regions.
- Tajikistan: Known as Tajik, a dialect of Persian with official status, spoken by around 9 million people.
- Uzbekistan: Has a significant Tajik-speaking minority that speaks a dialect of Farsi.
- Azerbaijan: Many people understand or speak Farsi, especially those of Iranian Azerbaijani origin.
- United Arab Emirates and Bahrain: Both have sizable Iranian immigrant communities where Farsi is widely spoken.
- Russia: Persian-speaking communities such as the Tats and Mountain Jews exist, speaking dialects close to Farsi.
Farsi also exists as a minority language in parts of Iraq, Oman, Pakistan, and other countries. The total number of Farsi speakers worldwide is estimated at about 110 million.
