Wombats live in Australia, specifically in various regions of southern and eastern Australia including Tasmania. There are three species of wombats with distinct habitats:

  • Common wombats (bare-nosed) are found in southeastern South Australia, Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, and Tasmania. They prefer hilly woodland areas, temperate forests, and coastal scrub and live in burrows in these regions.
  • Southern hairy-nosed wombats are mostly found in semi-arid regions of southern Australia, mainly in South Australia and some parts of Western Australia.
  • Northern hairy-nosed wombats are very rare and live only in central Queensland, mainly in Epping Forest National Park.

Wombats live in complex burrow systems that may extend up to 150 meters in radius and are often located near creeks and gullies. These burrows help them avoid heat and predators. They can be found in various habitats such as forests, alpine mountains, heathlands, and coastal shrublands depending on the species.
