Fertilization takes place in the fallopian tubes, which connect the ovaries to the uterus. After ovulation, the egg is released from the ovary and enters the fallopian tube, where it may meet sperm that have traveled from the vagina through the cervix and uterus. When a sperm successfully penetrates the egg in the fallopian tube, fertilization occurs, forming a zygote. This fertilized egg then travels down the fallopian tube to the uterus, where it may implant in the uterine lining to begin pregnancy
