Pope Francis wished to be buried in the Papal Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore (St. Mary Major) in Rome. He requested a simple tomb "in the ground, without particular ornamentation," bearing only the inscription "Franciscus," his papal name in Latin. This basilica holds special significance for him as a Marian sanctuary where he often prayed, and it is also linked to his devotion to the Virgin Mary. His burial there breaks with the recent tradition of popes being buried beneath St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican; he will be the first pope in over a century to be buried outside the Vatican. He specified that his tomb be placed in the niche of the side nave between the Pauline Chapel and the Sforza Chapel within the basilica. A benefactor has been arranged to cover the costs of his burial
