The Long Walk takes place in a dystopian alternative version of the United States. The story starts near the Canada–Maine border and follows a grueling, nonstop walking contest across a long pre-arranged route that presumably stretches through various states. The walkers must maintain a minimum pace and are continuously monitored by soldiers, continuing the walk until only one participant remains alive.
The film adaptation of The Long Walk was actually filmed in Manitoba, Canada, using locations such as Birds Hill Provincial Park, St. Lazare, and areas around Winnipeg, but the story itself is set in the U.S., particularly starting from the northern border near Maine.
