Wine originates from the region of West Asia, specifically including the area around the Caucasus Mountains, Zagros Mountains, Euphrates River Valley, and Southeastern Anatolia. This encompasses modern-day countries such as Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, northern Iran, and eastern Turkey. The earliest evidence of wine production dates back to between 6,000 BC and 4,000 BC. Archaeological finds include ancient wineries in Armenia and grape residues in clay jars in Georgia. The Shulaveri-Shomu culture is believed to have been among the earliest people to make wine in this region during the Neolithic period. Notably, Georgia is considered the birthplace of wine with evidence of winemaking that dates as far back as 8,100 to 6,600 BCE from Neolithic ceramics discoveries. The oldest known winery was found near Areni in Armenia, dating to around 4,100 BCE, and winemaking was already a sophisticated process there.
