The Bible talks about the rapture primarily in three main passages: 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18, 1 Corinthians 15:50-53, and Matthew 24:40-42.
- 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 describes believers being "caught up" (from the Greek word harpazo, meaning to seize or snatch away) to meet the Lord in the air, both those who have died and those still living. This is the source of the concept called the rapture, although the word "rapture" itself does not appear in the Bible.
- 1 Corinthians 15:50-53 explains the transformation of believers' bodies at the moment of the rapture, where the mortal will be changed to immortal "in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye" at the last trumpet sound.
- Matthew 24:40-42 records Jesus describing the suddenness of the event, where two people are working together and one is taken while the other is left behind.
These passages collectively describe the supernatural removal of Christians from the earth to be with Christ in the sky at His return, an event awaited in Christian eschatology known as the rapture.
