Alcohol is primarily metabolized in the liver. In the liver, alcohol (ethanol) is mainly broken down by the enzyme alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) into acetaldehyde, a toxic substance. Then, acetaldehyde is further metabolized by another enzyme, aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH), into acetate, which is less harmful and can be further broken down into water and carbon dioxide for elimination from the body. Minor roles in alcohol metabolism are played by other tissues such as the stomach, brain, pancreas, and by enzymes like cytochrome P450 and catalase, but the liver is the main site where over 90% of the metabolism occurs.
