Conception occurs in the fallopian tubes of the female reproductive system. Specifically, fertilization—the union of a sperm and an egg—usually happens in the ampullary region, the wider part of the fallopian tube. After ovulation, the egg is picked up by finger-like fimbriae at the end of the fallopian tube, where it may meet sperm that have traveled through the vagina, cervix, and uterus. Once fertilization occurs, the fertilized egg (zygote) moves toward the uterus for implantation.
