American Samoa is an unincorporated territory of the United States located in the South Pacific Ocean, in the Polynesia region. It lies about 2,200 miles (3,500 km) southwest of the U.S. state of Hawaii and is situated around 14°18′S latitude and 170°42′W longitude, approximately 40 miles southeast of the independent island country of Samoa. The territory consists of several volcanic islands including Tutuila (where the capital Pago Pago is located), Aunuʻu, Ofu, Olosega, and Taʻū, along with some coral atolls such as Rose Atoll and Swains Island. It is the southernmost U.S. territory and lies east of the International Date Line, north of Tonga, and west of the Cook Islands.
