Ancient Mesopotamia was located in the historical region of West Asia, specifically within the Tigris-Euphrates river system. It corresponds roughly to the territory of modern Iraq and also includes parts of present-day Iran, Syria, Turkey, and Kuwait. This region lies in the northern part of the Fertile Crescent. It is traditionally divided into Upper (Northern) Mesopotamia, from the sources of the Tigris and Euphrates down to Baghdad, and Lower (Southern) Mesopotamia, from Baghdad to the Persian Gulf. The name Mesopotamia means "land between the rivers," referring to the area between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers.
