Annapolis is the capital city of the U.S. state of Maryland. It is located on the western shore of the Chesapeake Bay at the mouth of the Severn River. Annapolis is about 25 miles (40 km) south of Baltimore and around 30 miles (50 km) east of Washington, D.C. It is the county seat of Anne Arundel County and the city's geographic coordinates are approximately 38.97306°N latitude and 76.50111°W longitude. Annapolis is part of the Baltimore–Washington metropolitan area and serves as both the state capital and a hub for state government. It is also home to notable institutions such as the United States Naval Academy and St. John's College.
