Azerbaijan is a country located at the crossroads of Eastern Europe and Western Asia, in the South Caucasus region of Eurasia. It lies between latitudes 38° and 42° N and longitudes 44° and 51° E. Azerbaijan is bordered by the Caspian Sea to the east, Russia to the north, Georgia to the northwest, Armenia and Turkey to the west, and Iran to the south. Its capital and largest city is Baku. Geographically, Azerbaijan features diverse landscapes including the Caspian Sea coastline, the Greater Caucasus mountain range to the north, and extensive flatlands in the central part of the country. It also has a landlocked exclave called the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic. Azerbaijan's territory is roughly comparable in size to Portugal or the US state of Maine, covering about 86,600 square kilometers.
