Bishop's Stortford is a historic market town located in the East Hertfordshire district of Hertfordshire, England. It lies along the River Stort on the northeast periphery of the London metropolitan area, close to the border with Essex. The town is situated just west of the M11 motorway and near London Stansted Airport, making it well-connected and popular with commuters. It is approximately 28 miles northeast of Charing Cross in central London and about midway between London and Cambridge. Bishop's Stortford has a population of around 40,000 and features a mix of residential areas, schools, colleges, and a vibrant town center with shops, markets, and cultural venues. The River Stort, after which the town is named, flows through it. The town's history dates back to Norman times when it was owned by the Bishop of London, from whom it derives its name. It has good railway links to London Liverpool Street and Cambridge and is part of the London commuter belt.
