Bora Bora is located in the South Pacific Ocean within the Society Islands archipelago of French Polynesia. It lies about 230 kilometers (approximately 140 to 165 miles) northwest of Tahiti, the largest island in French Polynesia. Bora Bora is part of the Leeward Islands group and is surrounded by a lagoon and a barrier reef. The island features remnants of an extinct volcano with two main peaks, Mount Pahia and Mount Otemanu, the latter being the highest point at 727 meters (2,385 feet)
