Buffalo is a city located in the western part of the U.S. state of New York. It is the county seat of Erie County and lies at the eastern end of Lake Erie, where the Niagara River begins, right on the Canadian border. Buffalo is about 17 miles south of Niagara Falls and is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls metropolitan area. The city covers an area of approximately 52.5 square miles (136 km²), with around 40.38 square miles (104.6 km²) of land and the rest water. It has a population of about 278,349 as of the 2020 census, making it the second-largest city in New York State after New York City
