Myanmar (also known as Burma) is a country in Southeast Asia. It is bordered by Bangladesh and India to the northwest, China to the north and northeast, Laos and Thailand to the east and southeast, and the Andaman Sea and Bay of Bengal to the south and southwest. The country sits on the Indochinese peninsula and covers about 676,578 square kilometers (261,228 square miles). Its official English name is the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, though the traditional name Burma is still widely used. The capital is Naypyidaw, and the largest city is Yangon (formerly Rangoon).
