Denver is the capital city and county of the U.S. state of Colorado. It is located at the western edge of the Great Plains, just east of the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains, at the confluence of Cherry Creek and the South Platte River. Denver is known as the "Mile High City" because its elevation is exactly one mile (5,280 feet or 1,609 meters) above sea level. The city lies about 12 miles east of the foothills of the Rocky Mountains and serves as a significant transportation, industrial, and cultural hub for the region.
