George Washington is buried at his estate home, Mount Vernon, in Virginia. He was interred there in a brick tomb on the estate grounds, which was constructed as he requested in his will. His body was originally placed in an older family crypt before being transferred to a new tomb built in 1831. This tomb also contains the remains of his wife, Martha Washington, and many other members of the Washington family.
The United States Capitol in Washington, D.C., includes a tomb planned for George Washington beneath the Rotunda, but it has never been used for his burial, and it remains empty.
