Hurricane Gabrielle is currently located about 655 miles west of the Azores in the North Atlantic Ocean. It is moving eastward at about 32 mph toward the Azores islands and is expected to approach and move across the Azores late on Thursday, September 25, into early Friday. The hurricane has maximum sustained winds near 85 mph and is forecast to maintain hurricane strength as it passes through the Azores. After that, Gabrielle is expected to weaken and transition into an extratropical low as it moves toward Portugal. A Hurricane Warning is in effect for the Azores due to the expected dangerous conditions including strong winds, heavy rain, storm surge, and large waves. Swells generated by Gabrielle may also affect Bermuda, the U.S. East Coast from North Carolina northward, and Atlantic Canada.
