Jerusalem is located in the Southern Levant, on a plateau in the Judaean Mountains between the Mediterranean Sea and the Dead Sea. It is situated approximately 60 kilometers east of Tel Aviv and the Mediterranean Sea and about 35 kilometers west of the northern tip of the Dead Sea. Jerusalem is surrounded by valleys including the Kidron, Hinnom, and Tyropoeon valleys, and its elevation is approximately 760 meters (2,490 feet) above sea level. The city lies at the geographical coordinates of about 31.77° N latitude and 35.21° E longitude. Politically, Jerusalem is a complex and often contested city. It is claimed as the capital by both Israel and Palestine. Israel administers the entire city and has its primary governmental institutions there, while Palestine envisions East Jerusalem as the capital of a future state. Jerusalem is historically and religiously significant to Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, and is one of the oldest cities in the world.
