It was created in 1927 by a pharmacist named William Walker Hunter, who initially made it as a glucose drink for people who were ill. The drink was first called "Glucozade" before being renamed Lucozade. It was originally sold mostly in pharmacies and hospitals as an energy aid for the sick. Over time, Lucozade transitioned from a medical recovery drink to a popular sports and energy drink. The brand was acquired by Beecham's in 1938, later becoming part of GlaxoSmithKline, and then purchased by the Japanese company Suntory in 2013. Manufacturing remains in the UK as of recent years.
