Mount Fuji is an active stratovolcano located on the Japanese island of Honshu. It is situated about 100 kilometers (approximately 62 miles) southwest of Tokyo, straddling the border between Yamanashi and Shizuoka prefectures. The summit of Mount Fuji uniquely does not belong to any prefecture but is simply designated as "Japan." The mountain is part of the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park and is surrounded by several small cities and lakes. It stands as the highest mountain in Japan with an elevation of 3,776.24 meters (12,389 feet) and is a cultural and natural symbol of Japan visible from Tokyo on clear days.
