Pope Benedict XVI is buried in the crypt underneath St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City. His tomb is located in the grottoes beneath the basilica's main floor, in the same tomb that was previously occupied by Pope John Paul II until his beatification in 2011. Benedict's burial took place on January 5, 2023, immediately following his funeral Mass in St. Peter's Square, presided over by Pope Francis. The burial was conducted with Benedict's coffin placed inside three nested coffins made of cypress wood, zinc, and oak. The tomb has been open to public visits since January 8, 2023
